The US military has retained and held the title of the strongest military in the world, and conflicts have proven that statement correct. 10% of US government spending, or over $800 billion, is spent on defense according to executive.gov, which is a massive amount for such a large country, economically and population-wise. This spending is to remain competitive with our adversaries, such as China and Russia. Yet we spend more on military than the next 10 countries combined, most of which are our allies or friendlies. The second highest spender is China, with over $200 billion, yet these numbers are believed to be inflated by the infamously dishonest CCP. This high spending on our military to "counter" smaller, incompetent threats as we have seen in Ukraine, really cast doubts on the necessity for such an expensive military when all the recent wars we've fought have been very controversial and perhaps unnecessary, when those funds could be redirected to programs for the citizens of the US.
I'm unsure whether you mean entirely or just partially. The US still needs a standing army as a deterrent against invasion, but presently it spends more money on its defence budget than the next 9 countries combined. That's beyond absurd and the money could be put to much better use elsewhere.
Who's we? I certainly shouldn't, but since you probably mean Americans, since most people here are from that land, my answer is yes. America should absolutely defund it's military.
The problem for the USA is that it spends so much public money on it's defense forces that it's infrastructure at home is crumbling. Trump is right. Why should US taxpayers subsidise the defense of foreign countries who are rich enough to defend themselves? Especially, since tooo many people within those rich countries hate the USA and have no gratitude to the USA defending them? The last I heard, the USA was trillions of dollars in dept. Obviously,, you have to cut back somewhere and since the USA's defense budget dwarfs the defense budgets of every other country on earth, then that is where you should start.
I for one am very grateful to the USA for being the world's policeman, but as events within the USA have proven, policemen putting their lives on the line to protect an ungrateful population is just not worth it. In the same way that "defund the police" will embolden criminals, "defunding the policeman of the world" will do the same for tyrants. But people need to see the consequences of their idiotic liberal ideas before they can think straight again. So, America, wake up. Reduce your armed forces and reduce your crippling levels of dept. Don't worry about defending people who despise you. Let them bear the consequences of their own stup-idity. That this will mean another world war is of no consequence to Americans. You are safe within your own country, nobody holding a gun is gong to invade you. And the best part is, that you can have the fun of watching the very same people who despise you begging you to come back and save their worthless asses again.
LOL how well did defund the cops work? Hahahaha reinstated plus budget increases after about a year of defund the police. Woke liberals will vote to have their nuts cut off if it was politically trendy at the time.
@tsword Here’s my answer. Who will defend the nation against those who wish harm against it.
So its all right for Mr Tard Adolph here to answer a question with a question but its out of the question for others to answer a question with a question is it?
What do you mean by "defund" exactly? The efficiency of governmental spending, including on the military, is incredibly low (remember the story about the $1,280 cups for pilots?), so implementing much tighter budget constraints seems like a good idea to me. If the government can purchase a cup for a pilot for $5, then it should be allowed to spend no more than $5 on it, and everything above that should come from the pilot's compensation. The current Department of Defense (DoD) budget is above $2 trillion; this is almost equal to the entire GDP of Russia, one of the strongest military powers in the world. Can DoD function well on $1 trillion? What about $500 million? $10 million is probably too low. I am in favor of finding a reasonable number (extrapolated from the experience of successful private companies that can serve as the gold standard of efficiency) and then forcing the DoD administration into this budget. Let them figure out how to spend it best, and do not spoil them with virtually unlimited granting of funding requests.
If, however, by "defund" you mean what people who coined the phrase "defund the police" mean - simple reallocation of inefficiently spent money to a different agency (such as Social Security) which spends it just as inefficiently - then deeper analysis is needed. My impression is that the US military is much stronger than it needs to be in the modern relatively safe world, but, say, the police is quite a bit weaker. Perhaps reallocating some funds to the police and simultaneously increasing training standards and code of conduct compliance could be justified. I think that it is absolutely unacceptable that you can go to a police academy and 6 months later be on the streets, legally empowered to terminate private individuals. The training has to be extremely rigorous and include not just learning the law, basics of the job and the like, but also martial arts, ethics courses... And police officers have to have to undergo regular mental and physical tests. I see so many obese police officers on the streets of Washington DC... Read it again: obese police officers. This sentence should be more revolting to anyone than, say, obese marathon runner. If a police officer cannot even maintain a decent physical shape, how is he/she supposed to make rational split-second decisions when things get hot out in the field? You have not exercised in a year, but you can be trusted to disarm a thug with a knife attacking you with minimal applied force necessary? Come on.
The US military is trained and performs extremely well, and many people in the military from other countries who have gotten to work with Americans praised their resilience and the "do not leave anyone behind" mentality. The US police, on the other hand, is largely a disgrace. If the military can be made a little weaker in exchange for the police issues getting fixed, then I would be all for it.
We have one former police officer here on forums... The guy is a complete nutjob. A system that produces this kind of people needs urgent reforming.
